Quilting with Rulers on your Home Machine

Discover innovative specialty-ruler and template techniques that will change the way you quilt and lead to stunning results.  In this first class we will focus on quilting straight lines with rulers.

You are required to have:

  • A machine in good working order.  Please test your machine in free-motion mode several weeks prior to class.  If your machine is skipping stitches as you try to free-motion, please get your machine serviced prior to class.  You will have a much more enjoyable class experience if your machine is working correctly.  (Just because your machine is stitching beautifully with a straight stitch doesn't mean it will in free-motion.  Please test it!)
  • An extension table is helpful.  It's hard to quilt with a ruler if the ruler keeps pivoting off the edge of your machine.  It's also very dangerous for your machine should pivoting cause the ruler to slide under your needle while sewing.  We can help you pick out and order a Sew Steady extension table for your machine if you don't already have one.  Extension table not required if you have a table at home that your machine can sit down into.  However, just know that what you learn during class will be much easier once you get home and have a larger flat surface to work on.
  • Recommended ruler & ruler foot available at A Stitch in Time
  • Additional supply list will be provided

Reminder, this is a free-motion quilting technique.  You do not have to be good at free-motion quilting, and most students have noted that quilting with rulers seems easier than free-motion quilting; but, it is expected that you are know how to set up your machine for free motion quilting and understand the basic motion of moving the quilt sandwich under the needle. A beginning FMQ class is offered frequently if you need to learn that skill.
