Beginner Hand Smocking

Learning to smock by hand is so much fun! We will practice basic smocking stitches on pleated fabric,
and then create a Christmas fan ornament with smocked detail for the class project. Once you learn the
technique, you will want to smock classic children’s garments for your little ones, or even women’s fine
clothing with touches of smocking.
I will bring my entire collection of smocked clothes to give you ideas about where you can go with your
new skill. Don’t want to sew the garments? You can also smock pre-made “blank” children’s clothes
that are already constructed and ready for you to do the fun part. Or make a lovely smocked sampler to
frame for your own home or as a gift. We will discuss other forms of smocking that you will want to
learn, such as picture smocking, American smocking, and others.
Your kit ($10 paid to teacher at class) will include a pleated solid fabric piece for practice, and supplies for a
Christmas fan ornament with smocked detail, including DMC embroidery floss and a size 10 darning needle.
